If on the one hand the maintenance of an EV truck is cheaper compared to diesel truck, on the other hand when carrying out a vehicle repair as a result of an accident or collision the repair prices are higher than those of a gas-powered vehicle.
During 2022 the number of sales of EVs trucks increased significantly, likely due to US government emission standards especially in is the state of California, which have become stricter over the years. California will need to get prepared for providing better infrastructure to charge electric vehicles, the number of sales of these vehicles will increase even more.
But, are the truck fleets and owners-operators pocket ready for the higher prices regarding the repair of EVs after collisions, accidents or battery replacements? Currently, the repair service in general is not prepared to meet this growing demand since the repair technicians need to perfectly trained for providing this service and have the complete equipment to repair an electric truck.
Although mechanically the electric trucks are simpler in comparison to the Diesel trucks. For example, is not necessary to perform services related to engine oil change, which helps to decrease maintenance expenses, but repairing parts of an EV truck after a collision or battery failure could be costly.
The mechanical workshop needs to be equipped and trained to repair these EV trucks that are increasingly seen on the roads. The workshops must have trained personnel and have the complete equipment such as:
- The properly diagnostic, which could include remote technical assistance, and reprogramming tools;
- Properly-trained technicians to run diagnostic system and network checks regarding these vehicles, technology, including ADAS systems, LIDAR, and collision-avoidance.
- A tablet with an updated and applicable (OEM) software;
- A J2534 device;
- Battery maintainer;
- Wireless modem
