Spending long hours sitting behind the wheel can affect circulation in your legs. When blood flow slows down, the risk of a blood clot forming in a deep vein—usually in the calf or thigh—can increase. This condition is known as deep vein thrombosis, or DVT.
The danger does not stop in the leg. If part of the clot breaks loose and travels to the lungs, it can cause a pulmonary embolism, a potentially life-threatening emergency. Sitting still for long periods is one factor that can increase the risk, especially when combined with obesity, smoking, recent surgery, a history of blood clots, cancer, or certain chronic medical conditions.
Common signs of DVT include swelling, pain or tende
ess, warmth, and discoloration in one leg. However, some people may have no symptoms at all. If you suddenly experience shortness of breath, chest pain that gets worse when breathing, coughing up blood, a rapid heartbeat, dizziness, or fainting, seek emergency medical attention.
To help reduce your risk, use safe stops as an opportunity to walk around and stretch your legs. While seated, move your ankles, bend your knees, and change positions regularly. Avoid keeping your legs crossed for long periods and try to wear clothing that is not too tight.
Do not start taking aspirin or wearing compression stockings on your own, thinking they will solve the problem. If you have several risk factors or a history of blood clots, talk with a healthcare professional about the steps that are right for you.
A swollen leg is not always just a sign of being tired after a long day on the road. Paying attention to wa
ing signs and moving regularly can help protect your circulation, your health, and your ability to keep working behind the wheel.
