Medical Checkups: Truck Drivers Should Not Keep Putting Off

Medical Checkups: Truck Drivers Should Not Keep Putting Off

Many truck drivers only go to the doctor when something already hurts… and by then the problem is often more advanced than they realize. On the road, ignoring your health does not just affect your life. It can also cost you your license. In Califo
ia and under federal rules, some medical checkups are not optional. They are part of what it takes to keep your CDL active.

The best-known one is the DOT physical, regulated by FMCSA. This exam must be completed every 24 months, or sooner if you have medical conditions. It checks blood pressure, vision, hearing, cardiovascular health, and conditions such as diabetes or sleep apnea. If you fail this exam, you could be temporarily placed out of service.

Blood pressure is one of the most critical factors. FMCSA uses specific ranges, and if your numbers are too high, your medical certification may be reduced to one year, three months, or even denied altogether. The worrying part is that many drivers do not know they have hypertension until it is already serious.

Diabetes is another major issue. If you use insulin, you need a special form, MCSA-5870, proving the condition is under control. Failing to provide that document can invalidate your DOT physical. On top of that, unstable blood sugar levels create a real safety risk behind the wheel.

Sleep apnea is also under growing scrutiny. Drivers who are overweight or constantly fatigued may be required to undergo a sleep study. Leaving this condition untreated does not just affect your rest. It can also keep you from getting medically certified.

Beyond legal compliance, there are other checkups you should get even if nobody requires them: yearly bloodwork, cholesterol screening, liver function testing, especially if you use medications or energy boosters, and prostate or gynecological exams, depending on age.

This is not only about following the rules. It is about understanding that your body is your work tool. A truck sitting still loses money… but a sick driver can lose everything.

Putting off a checkup does not save time. It steals more of it later, with interest.
