Finding a safe place to park continues to be one of the most frustrating problems for truck drivers across the United States. This is not just about convenience. The shortage of parking affects Hours of Service, rest, income, and highway safety.

An FMCSA planning memorandum published in April 2026 reports that 98% of commercial motor vehicle drivers have difficulty finding safe parking. Searching for a space can take more than 56 minutes of driving time each day and may cost a driver an estimated $5,500 per year in lost compensation.

When the clock is running out and truck stops are already full, drivers may be forced to choose between continuing to drive or stopping on highway shoulders, entrance ramps, or other unauthorized areas. Either option can lead to safety risks, tickets, or crashes. Looking for parking at the end of a shift also adds to driver fatigue and cuts into valuable rest time.

The best defense is to plan your stop well before your available hours run out. Identify several parking options along your route, check availability through trusted apps, and avoid relying on a single truck stop. It may also be wise to stop earlier when traveling through heavily congested corridors or during peak travel seasons.

Technology, however, cannot create spaces where none exist. That is why the U.S. Department of Transportation announced more than $200 million in federal funding for 2026 specifically for commercial vehicle parking projects. The goal is to increase the number of safe parking spaces and reduce fatigue-related crashes.
